The original pork tenderloin was created in 1904 at Nick's Kitchen located in Huntington, Indiana by a pushcart operator named Nicholas Freinstein.
It was an interesting drive and nice little town especially coming from the Northeast because I'd never heard of these so it was exciting to experience. It's a staple mom and pop ran by owners Caila and Mason. They are open from 7am to 2pm daily and the place gets packed so come early to get a good seat, I enjoy the window seats myself, gives you a chance to view the town as it walks by you.
I ordered the original tenderloin with grilled onions, pickles and lettuce and tomato hold the mayo and I was told it will be right out. While waiting I started with a slice of their scratch made sugar cream pie aka Hoosier pie (the state dessert) which I asked for first.
How was the Sugar Cream Pie?

If you're wondering why dessert first well sometimes I do lunch or dinner in reverse and most of the time I'm to full to enjoy a dessert so I started making it my appetizer. I was told the ingredients in the pie are simple filling of butter, flour, cream and sugar sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. The pie had a really good crust and base the filling was pretty good as well with a similar taste to a rice pudding without the rice. It was a familiar yet simple taste of pie with good balance of sweet and cinnamon spice that was decadent and you could tell was homemade.
How was the Tenderloin?

The tenderloin arrives and I have to say that I was loving the presentation and size of sandwich at Nick's. This is the OG in the game and I was excited to dig in. Now I'm not a mayo guy and maybe I should've asked the locals what they use as an alternative but I added ketchup to my bun and got some looks. It came out piping hot and my first bite was crispy and juicy goodness along with the grilled onion flavor. The tenderloin doesn't come with a toasted bun or seasoned so make sure to ask for what you would like or you can do the seasoning at the table. All and all this was a fantastic experience and I hope you visit again and spend more time in the beautiful town of Huntington, IN!
